Every shape below is drawn the same way and answers the same seven questions, so you can compare them instead of reading seven separate opinions. The questions are the operational ones: how many things you deploy, what happens to your data, how much network and secret surface appears, what you must be able to see, and what wakes you up.
This one is opinion, and it is worth saying so plainly. The rest of this section checks things against a standard or a running cluster; there is no standard for this. What is here is the operational bill as I have paid it, on teams between one and a few dozen people. Your numbers will differ, and the shapes are not a ladder: most products are best served by the second or third entry in that list, not the last one.
